Mon 13 January, 19:30 to 21:00 BCRA Cave Science Seminar:
Max Koether (Department of Geology, University of Alabama, USA) will talk on “Microbial Nitrogen Cycling and Cave Passage Modification in Gunung Mulu National Park, Malaysia”
This is the first in our 2025 series of online seminars, via Zoom. Further info at bcra.org.uk/seminars. Last-minute changes to the programme will be posted to our Facebook page. Anyone interested in offering a talk or suggesting a speaker / topic should contact the Secretary.
Cave and Karst Science. The final issue for 2024 (vol 51, number 3) went to the printers just before Christmas and should be posted out to all subscribers in early 2025. The online version should appear soon thereafter. Thanks are due to Andrew McLeod who has volunteered to take on the task of putting the journal online which was previously undertaken by David Gibson.
CREG (Cave Radio and Electronics Group ) issue 128
The latest edition is available online and as a printed version . This journal is not part of BCRA membership but needs to be ordered separately through the BCRA website. The next edition will be available in March 2025
2025 BCRA Science Symposium and AGM The.2025 science symposium and AGM will be held in the School of Geographical Sciences at Bristol University, hosted by Linda Wilson and Dave Richardson, on the weekend of 11/12 October 2025. The BCRA AGM will be held at lunchtime on the 11th . Further information will follow in the January newsletter
2025 Hidden Earth The dates for Hidden Earth have been announced as 26th-28th September 2025. Please check with the Hidden Earth media outlets and website [ https://hidden.earth/# ] for further information
UIS (Union Internationale de Speleologie) Congress Bid for 2029 The BCRA in conjunction with the BCA are putting in a bid in to host the 2029 International Congress of Speleology. The UIS hosts an International Congress of Speleology every four years which is the worlds most significant gathering of cave and karst scientists, educators ,managers and explorers. Anyone wishing to assist with the bid should contact the BCRA Chairman and further information will follow if we are successful in our bid to host this prestigious event.
BCRA membership .The Just Go membership system is now fully operational so when you renew your BCA membership it will be easy to add on BCRA membership. Membership for 2025 opened on the 1st of December. Membership fees have had to be increased this year due to rising costs. If you encounter any issues with your membership, please contact Katie Eavis [membership@british-caving.org.uk].
The next council meeting will be held on the12th February 2025 via zoom 19.30 to 21.00 Further information is available on the BCRA website
Supporting BCRA.
Members will note that there has been a lack of field meetings since the end of Covid restrictions and we encourage anyone willing to organise a meeting to contact the secretary. Further information regarding supporting BCRA is available at the following link https://bcra.org.uk/volunteer/index.html
IT Support
We would also welcome support from members who have experience with IT / web services. The IT team have also identified tasks that could be undertaken by anyone with basic skills, and which would ease the load. If you feel that you can assist, please contact the secretary: bcra-secretary@bcra.org.uk
Derbyshire Explorers Forum
A follow-up to the very successful 2023 Forum will be held at the Mechanics Hall in Eyam on 1st February. This provides an opportunity for those involved in exploring new cave to share discoveries and there is always much of interest to cave scientists. For further details see:
