BCRA Cave and Karst Ramble to the upper Dove Valley, Saturday 19th March 2021

Post by Linda Wilson » Sun 20 Feb 2022 12:18

An introduction to the geology, hydrology and landforms of the upper Dove Valley.

This is one of the best places in the country to examine the influence of geology on the evolution of the landscape and the formation of karst features. The field trip will start at the British Caving Library, Glutton Bridge [see http://caving-library.org.uk/ for location] at 10:30am on Saturday 19th March. There will be an opportunity to view the library, have a drink and use the facilities before setting off at around 11:00am.

The precise route will depend on the weather and enthusiasm of the participants but aims to skirt Parkhouse Hill, pass the Dowel Resurgence and walk over the top of Chrome Hill which, like Parkhouse Hill is an Asbian-age apron-reef. Continuing north the route will pass a series of sinking streams to a minor road before heading east for a visit to Owl Hole and Pikers Pit. The field trip will then follow the road down Dowel Dale before heading east and then south down a dry valley to the Glutton Springs and the return to the Caving Library.

Information on Owl Hole, Pikers Pit & other sites along the route can be found here [https://peakdistrictcaving.info/home/the-caves/dove/]

Bring a packed lunch and suitable footwear and clothing for walking in March.

There is no charge for attending but those doing so are invited to make a donation either on the day or online [https://bcra.org.uk/bookshop/donate.html].
