The British Cave Research Association is pleased to give details of its 27th Cave Science Symposium and associated field-trip. The Symposium will be hosted by Prof. Gideon Henderson and Dr. Stacy Carolin of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, on Saturday 22nd October, 2016. Whether you are an academic, an amateur scientist or a caver wanting to find out more about the underground environment, you will find something of interest at the Symposium. A programme of presentations is being assembled and further details will follow in later circulars, as well as via other BCRA news outlets.

Symposium

The Symposium will feature a number of oral and poster presentations on many aspects of cave science, with emphasis on BCRA’s principal areas of interest: speleogenesis, cave archaeology, and subterranean biology. Following the symposium, an informal evening meal will be arranged for those interested, details are to be decided.

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts are welcome for posters or oral presentations on any topic of cave or karst-based research, and these should be submitted by email no later than 31st August, 2016, to the lecture secretary, Gina Moseley gina.moseley[at]uibk.ac.at. Please include all authors with their affiliations, an email address for the primary author, and an abstract of up to 500 words (main text and references only). If you are intending to submit an abstract, Gina would appreciate you sending her an email with a preliminary title. Don’t worry, there is no commitment, but it helps her to compile a diverse and interesting programme.

Registration

Registration will take place on the day. A small fee will be requested to cover refreshments.

Oxford is easily accessible by road and rail and is just over an hour’s travel from London’s Heathrow Airport.

By car: The M40 Motorway passes close to Oxford. Use junctions 8 (from the South or East) or 9 (from the North). Use the A34 when approaching from the South and to connect from the M4 Motorway. Parking is hard to find in Oxford so it would be wise to use the Park and Ride services (https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/publ ... k-and-ride) service. Visitor parking at the department is for people with disabilities only and is by prior arrangement.

By Coach from London: Frequent 24-hour direct services connect Oxford with London (peak times every 10-20 minutes). Use the Oxford Express or the Oxford Tube services. Both services start from London Victoria and stop in the same places in Oxford.

By Coach from the Airports: There are frequent bus services from Heathrow (1.5 hrs), Luton (2 hrs), and Gatwick (2.5 hrs) Airports. Use The Airline service or National Express from Heathrow and Gatwick. Luton is served by National Express.

By Rail: Oxford is very well served by the rail network with direct services from places such as London, Southampton, Bristol, Bath, Manchester, and Birmingham.

A field meeting in memory of Charlie Self will take place to Box Mines, Wiltshire, on Sunday 23rd October, 2016. For further details please see the accompanying Field Meeting circular. Pre-registration for the field meeting is required and should be made to the meeting secretary, Dr. Trevor Faulkner, by sending an email to t.faulkner[-at-]bcra.org.uk by Friday 23 September 2016 at the latest.
