BCRA Cave Science Symposium 2023

SECOND CIRCULAR

The British Cave Research Association and Leeds Geological Association are pleased to
announce details of the 34 th Annual Cave Science Symposium and associated field-trip. The
Symposium will be hosted by Prof. Simon Bottrell and Dr. Phil Murphy at the School of Earth
and Environment, University of Leeds, on Saturday 21 st October, 2023. The programme of
oral and poster presentations will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn more about cave
and karst research and the underground environment. All are welcome and we particularly
invite Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students to participate. This will be a live event, but
will also be streamed on Zoom.

Please arrive from 9am for a 9.45pm start. Sessions will finish at 5pm. The BCRA's AGM will take
place during the Symposium from 12:00 to 12:50.
Following the symposium, an informal evening meal will be arranged for those who are
interested. Please sign up for all events using the google form below.

A fieldtrip to Gillfield Level and Nidderdale will take place on Sunday 22 nd October


Call for Abstracts
Oral and poster presentations are invited on all areas of cave and karst science, including
speleogenesis, hydrogeology, archaeology/palaeontology, biology and technology.
Those wishing to present at the Symposium should provide a title and an abstract of up to
500 words and indicate whether an oral presentation or poster presentation would be
preferred. This should be sent to Simon Bottrell (S.Bottrell@leeds.ac.uk) by 5th September,
2023.


Registration
Entry is free of charge, however donations towards the cost of the event would be

Location
The School of Earth and Environment is located in the centre of the University of Leeds
campus. It is about 20 minutes walk from Leeds rail Station and is served by several buses.
The venue is accessible from the main campus entrance on the A660 Woodhouse Lane and
from Calverley Street (quicker if walking from Rail Station). Parking is available at the
campus multi-storey car park, less than 5 minutes’ walk from the venue and accessible from
both the main campus entrance on the A660 Woodhouse Lane and from Calverley Street
entrance. A detailed map of venue and facilities will be provided with the Programme.


Refreshments
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served during the morning and afternoon coffee breaks. For
hot drinks at other times, and for lunch, the Student Union Building is a very short walk from
the venue, with coffee bars, Refectory and “The Old Bar”. Other options are available close
to campus.
