CREG Field Meeting 5/6 November 2016

Post by Rob Gill » Fri 07 Oct 2016 12:03

Plans are now well advanced for the Autumn Field Meeting in the Yorkshire Dales.

This promises to be a very interesting event, with quite a variety of things to see and do.

Accommodation has been reserved for Friday and Saturday nights at Brackenbottom, near Horton, courtesy of the Bradford Pothole Club.
If you’ve not used Brackenbottom before, please contact Mike for directions (bedfordmd@aol.com).

Saturday 5th November: We will meet at Inglesport Cafe in Ingleton at 0900 and then move to Yordas for a 1000 start. Later on, we’ll probably move to KMC Valley Entrance.
Sunday 6th November: The plans for Sunday will follow a similar pattern but we may use a different cave, depending on experimental requirements. More details to come.

Some Highlights...
a. The opportunity to play with a ZEB-REVO handheld laser scanner, as featured in CREGJ93 earlier this year.
b. We’ll have a detailed look at the Cave Link messaging system, that’s being adopted by many cave rescue groups. We had a demonstration at EuroSpeleo, but our field meeting will allow a much closer look and we’ll be able to see just what it can do. Cave Link has a number of add-ons and with luck we’ll also be able to put some of these through their paces.
c. We will have the latest DSP noise filter from bhi Ltd and be able to feed this with ‘challenging’ audio from a cave radio to hear how this DSP unit improves intelligibility and reduces listener fatigue.
d. There will be some long-range data transmission to see just how far we can reach from an underground transmitter and generally push the HF cave radio envelope a bit further.
Other things are in the pipeline, including quite possibly, one or two talks. If you have something to bring along, either to test or just to ‘show and tell’, please do. It’s great to see what people are up to - and it gets the creative juices flowing!

It would be useful to know who, and how many, are coming, so please drop Mike an email to let us know if you are planning to come.
Further news will be posted on the CREG-Announce mailing list. Sign up at CREG-announce@lists.bcra.org.uk.

Look forward to seeing you!
Rob
