4th Hypogean Archaeology Congress
Waters from the past: hydraulic works from ancient times to the 20th Century
(First Telematic Congress)

«Ma sotto quella radice che è nel mondo dei giganti c’è la fonte Mímir, in essa sono celati saggezza e acume e colui che la possiede si chiama Mímir; egli è ricco di conoscenza, poiché beve alla fonte con il corno Giallarhorn. Un tempo venne Allfödr e chiese di bere un sorso alla fonte, ma lo ottenne soltanto dopo aver lasciato in pegno un occhio»
Snorri Sturluson, Edda, 15

Date
September 2009
The participation in the Congress is free of charge

Organization
The Congress is organized by Napoli Underground (NUg) and Federazione Nazionale Cavità Artificiali (FNCA), united in this new initiative conceived in order to advance the Hypogean Archeology, a discipline that deals with the research, study and classification of hypogean works.

Subject: hydraulic works
The water, its search and fruition have accompanied Men’s life since the beginning of Time.
The congress would like to be a virtual meeting point to exchange and compare all the different approaches to the knowledge of the hydraulic works, taking in consideration various aspects such as: collection, transport, distribution, storage and disposal.

Works
The works to be presented to the Congress should treat the hydraulic works realized from the ancient times to the 20th Century, following the subsequent typologies and sub-typologies (for further information concerning the classification of the hypogean works refer to the following web sites: www.archeologiadelsottosuolo.it - www.hypogeanarchaeology.com):

HYDRAULIC WORKS

a. WATER SUPPLY AND TRANSPORT

aqueduct, artificial underground canal, artificial vaulted canal, drainage channel, natural vaulted water course, underground effluent, filtering gallery, connecting shaft.

b. VERTICAL PERFORATIONS

c. STORAGE

The Idea of a Telematic Congress
Fulvio Salvi, from Napoli Underground, conceived the idea of a Telematic Congress during the return trip from the “3rd Hypogean Archaeology Congress. I ricoveri antiaerei”, that took place in Massa last year (5th - 7th October). The initiative has the aim to counter the necessary efforts in terms of time and money that usually accompany those kind of events. Besides the normal activities carried out on the field, followed by the analysis of the gained results and the drawing of the topographic survey, there are the transfer costs and sometimes the registration fee. More and more these conditions tend to restrain the researcher taking part to these events, depriving both the other speakers and the audience of useful information for a cultural growth. To counter these inconveniences, giving to everybody the chance to attend the congress, we have decided to apply the modern technology to the knowledge diffusion concerning the works from the ancient past. The idea is to constitute an instrument headed to a real and egalitarian transmission of the knowledge. Summarizing NUg and FNCA are cooperating to gain the best result in their field activity diffusing in the meantime the knowledge of the operational methodology.

Modern technologies in the service of research
The Congress will be held via Internet using the "new" technologies that the world wide web has made available: in particular the innovation that will allow this new way of conceiving the congress activity is the live broadcast service proposed by Mogulus through which Naples Underground offers the homonymous channel “Naples Underground Channel ". This system essentially allows you to achieve a genuine television from which transmit movies, direct interviews and teleconferences allowing, with a total costs abatement, to attend the Congress without having the economic commitments related to trip and the permanence in other cities. The participation in the Congress takes place directly from the own headquarter and the intervention is transmitted through the “web-tv" via live streaming. Individual contributions, previously agreed, will be broadcasted live and then followed by debates with listeners, who can ask questions through a chat service beside the widget Mogulus. ll that is needed to participate in the Congress is the availability of a computer, a webcam and an internet connection fast enough to allow the transmission of audio/video streaming.

Congress broadcast
All the partecipations, performed live, will be recorded and it will be possible to watch them in the "ON-DEMAND" section of the Napoli Underground Channel.
